The Black Hills Stock Show is more than an event

The sweat drips from his brow as he saddles up for his final event. Feeling somewhat broken and tired, he holds on to the feeling of victory as he grips the ropes and inhales. The gate swings open, his eyes close and he’s ready for the ride of his life.

Sounds like an opening scene to a movie or a paragraph in a book, right? This moment can be seen and felt during the rodeo events at the Black Hills Stock Show. Cowboy hats, belt buckles and boots are a sudden flood within the Rapid City area during Stock Show week as ranchers and western culture lovers descend upon the area.

Initially seen as an event to bring the country western lifestyle to the urban areas of the Black Hills, the Stock Show has evolved into so much more. From the CINCH trade show vendors, live music, roping and sheep dog trials to the livestock and horse shows, the Stock Show has become a culture, growing and evolving with each passing year.

I have been attending the stock show for several years with my family. Fortunately, I have watched the event grow, both from a business and a personal perspective. Not only has the entertainment side of the Stock Show grown but they have seen a nice influx of vendors over the years, giving new attendees a nice variety to choose from.

Here at the hotel, we enjoy welcoming our new and returning guests who arrive to take in the local culture, both at the Stock Show and in Rapid City. We often encourage those who book one night with us to consider making an extended stay. There’s an argument that one night is just never enough time to properly experience some of the best place Rapid City has to offer.

We hope that everyone who joins us for this year’s Black Hills Stock Show truly enjoys the experience and they are able to take in some of our local restaurants and shops to round out their time in Rapid City.
